'Orang Ulu'

The phrase Orang Ulu means upriver people and is a term used to collectively describe the numerous tribes that live upriver in Sarawak's vast interior. Such groups include the major Kayan and Kenyah tribes, and the smaller neighbouring groups of the Kajang, Kejaman, Punan, Ukit, and Penan. Nowadays, the definition also includes the down-river tribes of the Lun Bawang, Lun Dayeh, Murut and Berawan as well as the plateau-dwelling Kelabits. The various Orang Ulu groups togther make up roughly 5.5% of Sarawak's population.

The Orang Ulu are artistic people with longhouses elaborately decorated with murals and woodcarvings. They are also well-known for their intricate beadwork detailed tattoos. The Orang Ulu tribe can also be identified by their unique music - distinctive sounds from their sape, a stringed instrument not unlike the mandolin.

A vast majority of the Orang Ulu tribe are Christians but old traditional religions are still practiced in some areas.

sorry to say this to you too, orang ulu is not a religion but several group of natives(originals of borneo interior) almost similar looks, similar food, customs & belief(at least in the past) and even similar dialect to each other.the kenyah and the penan speak similar dialects. the lun bawang, kelabits and terings speaks similar dialects. the lun bawang, lun dayeh,penan/punan and bisaya dont live in longhouses like most other orang ulu tribe. Most penans and punans stay in villages, except for a few day in the jungle to hunt or fruit gathering but they dont stay in the jungle now.To say that todays penan and punan living in the jungle and asking them to keep doing so is not right.they should be taught that there are better and healthier to live. They are not animals to be sent back to the jungle to stay there. Last, belief it or not most or all penan and punans below the age of 40yrs can read and write.

Sorry to say this,I think Punan and Penan is not
include in Orang Ulu religion. They are Sarawak
oborigin depending on there living place,I meant they
not live behind the main river but in the jungle.
So,as the aborigin at peninsular malaysia, goverment should
give and keep the specialist on they own right on life.
