87.53% Decrease in Dengue Cases Compared to 2010

The year ends with a statistics of dengue cases in Miri, with almost 90% decrease of dengue cases for the year 2011 compared to last year. The number of dengue cases are less than 10 cases per month by the end of November, with 93 cases compared to 746 cases in 2010. It is not known if these are confirmed cases or suspected cases.

When compared to 2007-2009 figures, 93 cases seemed fairly normal as the (missing) statistics of 2010 spike of 746 cases seemed like an anomaly.

RM 9,000,000 Bridge Connecting to Miri Peninsular Near Completion

The bridge in Piasau connecting to Miri Peninsular is near completion and is expected to be opened to public use sometime during Chinese New Year. The original proposal was meant to be single lane, but this was later deemed inadequate and changed to dual lane to ease traffic. What's left now are the finalizing work, such as street lights.

Without this bridge as a shortcut, Mirians would have to go through Lutong to get to the Miri peninsular. Many years ago, a ferry near the other end of the Miri peninsular handled the traffic to and fro as a third option to access the peninsular.

The Old Piasau Bridge, which has stood in its place and reinforced a few times for more than 30 years, would be handed over to the Public Works Department (JKR) for maintenance.

Apparently the bridge was given a name of "Miri River Bridge", and the old one next to it was "Piasau Bridge", but we think this is just a recipe ripe for confusion. Why not call it "New Piasau Bridge? Never mind the RM9,000,000 cost yet.

It's Been Over a Year Since the ban on Plastic Bags

It's been about a year since the ban of plastic bags everyday of the week. The ban of plastics are set in place to create awareness among the public on the dangers of expansive use of plastic, reduce or minimize the plastic usage starting from shopping complexes by using recyclable shopping bags and encourage public from various levels to participate in environmental awareness programme.

That is the idea. The reality however, is that I still see people resorting to those plastic trash bag packs sold at convenience stores for their trash. The blame on the plastic bags causing pollution in the sea and rivers are not justified either - this is purely as a result of irresponsible people throwing them into the sea and not the plastic bag's fault. What about the use of paper bags or biodegradable plastic bags? Or what about the excessive use of plastics on manufactured products?

It is worth noting that the many, many booklets of parking coupons issue by the Miri Council itself are made of questionable material as well. How biodegradable are the parking coupons, and are the silver scratching material toxic?

Is this campaign actually working? What are your thoughts on it?

Math quiz: Parking coupons in Miri are supposed to cost RM4.25. They take RM5 and give you back RM0.70. What happened to the RM0.05?

The person in the parking booth claims they do not have 5 cents left (this early in the morning at 9am!)

So what do they do? Don't return the 5 cents, of course. Well of course to make excuses for laziness for not preparing enough 5 cent coins. We all know that if theyare to 'fix' this problem they will probably round the price up to RM4.30 or RM4.50, not issue more 5 cent coin changes.

Drug Arrests : A Shocking 476 Person Arrested Since Start of Year 2011

The Miri Police Narcotics division investigated 349 drugs related cases from Jan 1 to July 31 of this year. Four hundred and seventy-six (476) people were arrested for their involvement in drugs in Miri in the first six months of this year (2011). Miri police chief ACP Jamaludin Ibrahim disclosed this during the ‘Program Polis Bersama Masyarakat’ yesterday.

There was no public statement or it was not reported on the news on what the police are doing to curb this, or what is being done. What does this say about the state of drug crime related activities in Miri?

China City to Adopt Miri as its Sister City

Beihai Foreign Affairs and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office section chief Ellen Lei made the announcement of its intention to adopt Miri Resort City as one of its international sister cities when leading six delegates on their first courtesy visit to Miri mayor Lawrence Lai at the Miri Municipal Council office yesterday.

According to Lei, “We want to make Miri Resort City representing Malaysia as one of our international sister cities among other nine countries."

“Beihai’s inaugural international sister city is Tulsa, the second largest city in Oklahoma, USA which was incorporated in March, 1987. Beihai city has now established relations with nine international sister cities,�? she added.

According to her, the other eight international sister cities are Yatsushiro Japan, Gold Coast Australia, Suva Fiji, Lugano Switzerland, Hatyai Thailand, Leduc City Canada, Puerto Princesa Philippines and Semarang Indonesia.

“We are hoping to establish ties with Miri City to represent Malaysia as a whole as the 10th international sister city with Beihai, China,�? she said.

Malaysian Craft Promotion Starts Today

55 entrepreneurs from Melaka, Selangor, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak will take part in the promotion of Malaysian handicrafts here from Friday until May 25. The stalls sell handicrafts created from textile, forest and land products and metals.

The promotion includes craft education for selected primary and secondary school pupils, who would be taught such skills as the coloring and printing of batik, weaving and embroidering.

A workshop on the traditional art of rattan weaving would be held, and cultural shows would be presented in cooperation with the Sarawak Cultural and Arts Department, Information Department and local cultural associations.

A recommended visit for the weekend.

The Digitized Clock Tower

Almost five years after the clock breaks down, and was covered up and left for decay, just recently it was fixed, and "modernized" a bit - by turning it into a digital clock, no longer an old-fashioned mechanical one. Not surprisingly, this was a very swift move just as the elections are coming round the corner. Coincidence?

What do you think of this digital clock tower? Is it better to have the digitized version in digits instead of the 'analogue-style' face? Please give your opinions. Notice that time difference. For different time zones in Miri?

Water Treatment Plants to Open for Visitors on March 26th

Laku Management Sdn Bhd will be holding an open day to let visitors learn on how water is being processed, treated and distributed, in conjunction with the ‘2011 World Water Day’ this Saturday.

The open day, from 9am to 4pm, will be held at water treatment plants in Miri, Bintulu and Limbang simultaneously.

Lambir Water Treatment Plant, Miri, is located at Km 15, off Miri-Bintulu Road.

Nyabau Water Treatment Plant, Bintulu, is situated off Km 1, Bintulu-Miri Road.

Berawan Water Treatment Plant, Limbang, is at Km 10, Jalan Batu Danau/Nanga Medamit, Limbang. For more information, call the respective office at 085-611273 (Miri), 086-318164 (Bintulu) and 085-211601 (Limbang).

The event is aimed at raising the awareness on appreciation for waters. This would be an eye opening experience to better understand the functions of water treatment plant, in processing and treating waters obtained from the rivers before being supplied to the homes.

The Admission is free and encouraged the public to attend the open day.

'Radiation' Text Message is Fake

Most of you reading this might have received this text message with a message has been circulating around since Monday saying to stay indoors due to the radiation leak.

This is the text message:

BBC Flash news : Japan Government confirms radiation leak at Fukushima nuclear plants. Asian countries should take necessary precautions. If rain comes, remain indoors first 24 hours. Close doors and windows. Swab neck skin with betadine where thyroid area is, radiation hits thyroid first. Take extra precautions. Radiation may hit Philippine at around 4 pm today. If it rains today or in the next few days in Hong Kong. Do not go under the rain. If you get caught out, use an umbrella or raincoat, even if it is only a drizzle. Radioactive particles, which may cause burns, alopecia or even cancer, may be in the rain.

BBC has denied reporting this news, and the radiation has reached harmful levels but there is no suggestion that it is affecting anything other than the immediate area in Japan only.

Pan Borneo Highway - "Killer Highway" & Recent Express Bus Accidents

The 'highway', a route connecting Bintulu & Miri in northern Sarawak, has always been known as a very accident-prone and a hotbed for crime and carjackings, now is also becoming a hotbed for express bus accidents.

Three serious express bus accidents occured in the past 5 months, claimed five lives, one including a six-month pregnant victim. In the latest accident, foreign tourists were also involved.

The list of express bus accidents :

- On March 4th, an express bus ferrying 19 people turned-turtle at the Pan Borneo Highway. It is fortunately that everyone, including some foreign tourists survived.

- On Jan 28, and express bus was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry,killing an Indian national and a pregnant woman.

- On Nov 21 last year, three people were killed and eight others injured when the express bus they were traveling in, collided head-on with a 38-tonne lorry.

It is not known what the causes were in these accidents. But the 'highway' is notorious for its deadly pot-holes, narrow roads and a lack of street lighting and effective reflectors for motoring individuals and other traffic, lack of maintenance and poor safety barriers.

Sarawakian woman reported missing in Christchurch

Search efforts to find a Malaysian woman who was reported missing in Christchurch, New Zealand following earthquakes last Tuesday are still ongoing.

According to Ayauf Bachi, chief of the Malaysian operations room in Chirstchurch, they received reports on the missing woman from her friends on the day of the incident.

The family of the woman, who is in her 30s, originating from Sarawak, has
been informed of her disappearance.

The New Zealand Civil Defence team, which heads the search and rescue operations, has also been informed of the missing woman who works for a private company in the city.

There were 636 Malaysians in Christchurch, including 390 students, and they have held meetings with about 40 students yesterday to find out what kind of assistance is needed. The earthquake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale last Tuesday, has caused the death of 98 people, while 300 others were reported missing.
