The clocktower post, one year on.

No, not recent pictures of the clocktower. I didn't get the chance to take one, not that it needed one - it still looked the same covered up currently.

Rather, I went home today to read the papers - and immediately saw this on the front page:

I'll put a loose translation to the news piece for those who don't read chinese;

- basically, they were reporting that they are trying to to avoid demolishing the clock tower at the Puchong* roundabout in front of Pelita Tunku to make way for the flyover that was planned to be built there. Basically put, they want to enginneer the flyover around it as best as they could. Or something like that. As long the whole point is trying to keep it standing.

Coincidentally, almost exactly a year ago, on June 25th, 2006, I wrote this little piece about the tower. It's about how the clocktower stopped working and how they delt with it, and how the clock tower has some significance to all Mirians. There's also a part two, with another clocktower in a similar situation.

I wonder if that news in the papers was inspired by that post? Or just a freak coincidence that it would be exactly one year later, and coincidentally also about the Puchong roundabout clocktower? (The photo of the faceless clock still brings a sense of eerieness to it).

Well at least some effort was done to avoid bulldozing over old structures. (The clocktower isn't really that old, but it's a good start to think about preserving old structures. Just hope they don't mess it up.)

I wonder if they do the same with avoiding cutting down old trees in the city?

* It was only just recently I learned that that area is called 'Puchong'. After nearly 30 years of growing up in Miri..... :D

UPDATE : See the clocktower in 2011.

Wow, great to hear that. It's one of the earliest known landmarks in Miri. Your dad must feel real happy to hear his tower is being saved, and I hope the council or contractors will do something to keep it running for years to come.

I thought of writing of the clock tower when I came here in December 2006 but since there's no clock face on it, I cancel my intention. I have a blog on clock tower too but nit very active at the moment.

Hi, Zach - I thought the clocktower was simply a neglected structure about to be demolished and nobody ever gave it a second look in Miri. It seems that a lot of people are still interested in it.

It's a shame that the clock tower never made it into your clocktower blog. In fact, the whole thing currently is an eyesore at the moment because it was neglected and covered up. I'm just hoping one day it will be restored to working order and stand proudly alongside the new flyover project about to start soon.
