Flash Floods in Miri

Sudden downpour of torrential rain for just over an hour causes flash floods around Miri town today at noon 3rd of February, 2009.
The higher-than-usual amount of precipitation over the past month also caused many landslides, potholes and road breakages, flooding and bridge collapses around Miri, taxing rescue workers and engineers and endangering lives.
Lambir Hills National Park

I went to Lambir the on the 2nd day of Chinese New Year and visited the Latak Waterfalls for half a day. Compiled a little video on the trek to Lambir just to show what to expect on the trek there.

Things to note: The first bridge towards Latak had broken into two by a fallen tree and they used a makeshift bridge to get across the creek. It was a pretty sad sight and we're all wondering why didn't they fix the whole bridge immediately instead of just making a makeshift bridge. Lack of budget?
The other thing; the entrance fee. It's now RM10 per person, with some group discount. I remember a time when it was free.

Otherwise, it's a pretty fun outing to be out and about with nature; it is pretty uneventful and not even a leech or mosquito bite, surprisingly! And while it was raining heavily in town, Lambir was spared with only very light rain that stopped just as soon as it started.
More information on Lambir National Park can be found here.
New Year's Fire on top of Bintang Plaza Extension on 1st January 2009.

Special thanks to the Youtube uploaders for the videos respectively. (In the third video, you can probably just spot the guy who took the second video.)
As Miri grows into a City and there are more & more high rise buildings, would the fire department be able to handle such a fire? I don't ever recall the fire department having ladders that extend to more than 3 stories tall. They already have trouble with second floor fires as it is, what about fires like these? Thankfully, the building is under construction and isn't occupied yet. No word on whether there are any injuries or casualties.
