China City to Adopt Miri as its Sister City

Beihai Foreign Affairs and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office section chief Ellen Lei made the announcement of its intention to adopt Miri Resort City as one of its international sister cities when leading six delegates on their first courtesy visit to Miri mayor Lawrence Lai at the Miri Municipal Council office yesterday.

According to Lei, “We want to make Miri Resort City representing Malaysia as one of our international sister cities among other nine countries."

“Beihai’s inaugural international sister city is Tulsa, the second largest city in Oklahoma, USA which was incorporated in March, 1987. Beihai city has now established relations with nine international sister cities,�? she added.

According to her, the other eight international sister cities are Yatsushiro Japan, Gold Coast Australia, Suva Fiji, Lugano Switzerland, Hatyai Thailand, Leduc City Canada, Puerto Princesa Philippines and Semarang Indonesia.

“We are hoping to establish ties with Miri City to represent Malaysia as a whole as the 10th international sister city with Beihai, China,�? she said.

Malaysian Craft Promotion Starts Today

55 entrepreneurs from Melaka, Selangor, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak will take part in the promotion of Malaysian handicrafts here from Friday until May 25. The stalls sell handicrafts created from textile, forest and land products and metals.

The promotion includes craft education for selected primary and secondary school pupils, who would be taught such skills as the coloring and printing of batik, weaving and embroidering.

A workshop on the traditional art of rattan weaving would be held, and cultural shows would be presented in cooperation with the Sarawak Cultural and Arts Department, Information Department and local cultural associations.

A recommended visit for the weekend.

The Digitized Clock Tower

Almost five years after the clock breaks down, and was covered up and left for decay, just recently it was fixed, and "modernized" a bit - by turning it into a digital clock, no longer an old-fashioned mechanical one. Not surprisingly, this was a very swift move just as the elections are coming round the corner. Coincidence?

What do you think of this digital clock tower? Is it better to have the digitized version in digits instead of the 'analogue-style' face? Please give your opinions. Notice that time difference. For different time zones in Miri?

Miri High Street Gong Xi Bazaar 2011 (28th January - Chinese New Year's Eve )

Gong Xi Bazaar is going on in High Street in town, where you can buy Chinese New Year trinkets, food and stock.

So beware the area will be a massive jam along High Street, Bendahara, Raja Road - if you're driving, please park at the Municiple Multi-Story Car Park if you plan to go there. If you're walking, it is just a short distance walk from the major hotels in town area.

22nd January 2011 - AirAsia’s Singapore-Miri Direct Flight is Back Again

After a long time, AirAsia's Singapore - Miri flight has been reinstated with the first batch of visitors brought in from Singapore on 21st January.

Mirians finally have something to cheer about after several false starts that lead to suspension of Miri-Singapore flights that barely lasted half a year from early March last year; and a reinstatement that did not turn out as anticipated late March last year.

The direct flight is expected to save visitors several hours in transit time and much hassle, which will boost inbound tourism for Miri and Sarawak.

18th November 2010 - One Mega Event Every Month Next Year In Miri

MIRI, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- The Miri City Council (MCC) plans to hold a mega event every month next year to maintain the city's vibrant momentum, its mayor, Lawrence Lai, said Thursday.

He said, apart from maintaining prominent events which were held over the past five years, several new international events would be included.

NEWS: Direct Miri-Singapore flights from Jan 21

MIRI: AirAsia is ready to mount four return direct flights weekly between here and Singapore starting Jan 21 next year.

The flights are on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, taking off at 8.30am from here, and at 10.50am from Singapore.

These flights are already open for booking online.

Talks of Singapore - Miri AirAsia Flights to be Reinstated January 2011 (Updated)

Lately there are talks that the Miri-Singapore flight will be reinstated starting January 21st, 2011. Supposedly the flight is scheduled to fly Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, & Sundays per week. The flight will be a direct flight, it just has to stop at Kuching for transit.

A simple check at the AirAsia web site for scehduled flights from Miri > Singapore after January 2011 hasn't yet turned up any results yet though.

Event : Miri Tattoo Exhibition to be Held October 9th & 10th

The event on October 9th & 10th, starting 9am to 6pm at the Miri Civic Centre. For those interested, this would provide a good chance to see tattoo artists in action and they will display skills in tribal and traditional designs, famous tattooists from neighboring cities are expected to participate in this event.

Charges for tattoos during the exhibition would be reasonable.

Miri Airport Visitor Traffic (2006 - July 2010)

The Miri Non-International Airport visitor traffic from 2006 until July 2010. Miri Airport is still the third busiest airport after Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Every day, there are an average of 110 flights going in and out at the non-international airport.

My take:

It seems that there are plans for an 'extension' of the Miri Non-International Airport terminal yet again and a budget for this is being evaluated. With such minor traffic increase (see above table) since 2006, it seems as if the 'extension' is not to ease the traffic, but rather a 'fix' to right all the design flaws brought by the terminal 'rebuild' in 2003.

A blogger reminiscents about Miri City in his post, on how the city today is compared to the past how the city has basically forgotten much of its its history and some of its citizens' less than stellar attitudes towards tourists from neighboring countries, not to mention some of the somewhat mediocre infrastructures.

He puts it best here, and I quote him:

"There is so little around us to remind us of its golden glorious history and the bad past when ambitious egomaniac Japs ruled the Asian region and the many past heroes and founding fathers of the ex-town seem to be conveniently forgotten and unrecognised. Case in point: just take a walk to the oldest Mission school in the city and you will soon realise not a single street is named after its Asian founder or the many pioneers who established the first oldest educational institution."
